Myanmar Peace Monitor: Over 1,000 Killed By Landmines
Resistance forces fighting Burma’s military regime since the coup have reportedly killed 1,188 regime soldiers, according to the Myanmar Peace Monitor.
The monitor, founded by Burma News International, a network of 16 independent media and news organisations based in and around the country of which KNG is part of, reports that the regime was attacked on 305 days between 1 February 2021 and 18 April 2023. Of these, Sagaing Region recorded the most attacks, with 139 days. Magwe Region experienced 51 days of attacks and Mandalay 30 days.
“The actual number (of days) of landmine attacks is probably higher than this figure,” said an anonymous member of the People’s Defence Forces from Sagaing Region. But because the military regime has cut internet and phone connections in the area, the media couldn’t report on all the attacks where “the whole Sagaing Region has been burned” he said.
The military wing of the Kachin Independence Organisation, the Kachin Independence Army, attacked the Burma army for 14 days during the period the Myanmar Peace Monitor has recorded.
