Gold Mine Floods Farms Around Indawgyi Lake

Rice paddies next to a gold mine started after the military coup have been inundated near the Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State.

Heavy rains in Mohnyin Township earlier this month caused flooding of about eight feet in some areas, damaging agriculture and several houses.

“Rice fields at the foot of a hill were damaged because of their proximity to a gold mine,” an anonymous source told KNG. Flooding near Nam Moon town carried loose dirt next to the mine over 20 acres of the farmland.

In previous years, before mining started, farmers in the area were not affected by flooding.
