Military Regime Arrests Kachin National Congress Chairperson

The military junta arrested Dr M. Kawn La, chair of the Kachin National Congress and charged him with incitement under Article 505 (a).

According to KNC’s spokesperson, the chairperson of the political party was arrested in Naypyitaw at 3pm on Wednesday, August 25, when he got into his car after leaving the office. The armed forces also took away M. Kawn La’s vehicle.

“I do not know the reason why he was arrested. We have not had any communication with him (since his arrest),” the spokesperson told KNG.

KNC members refused to accept an invitation to attend a meeting of the new election commission formed by the military junta.

Dr M. Kawn La is a founding member of Kachin People’s Political Front (KPPF), which released a policy paper for Kachin State.
