KIO Shutters Borders Amid Burma’s Third Wave

The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) sealed its borders with the rest of Burma at a time when the country is struggling to contain its third wave.

“We are going to close all the entries into our territory, including to travellers and supplies. The only food will only come from China,” Col Hing Wawm from KIO’s COVID-19 Control and Response Committee told KNG. The border will stay shut until the pathogen declines, he said, while acknowledging the hardships it will cause many people.

The committee announced that Mai Sak Pa, Ner Ru, Sher Mu Kawng and Mai Ja Yang gates are closed on Monday, June 5.

Last month, the committee introduced a 14-day quarantine for all travellers entering KIO’s area.

Currently, outbreaks are affecting every large town under the government’s control in Kachin State.
