KIA Topples Junta Camps Between Indawgyi Lake and Hpakant

Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allies have seized three more of the regime’s camps, which housed Burma army and People’s Militia Force (PMF), between Indawgyi Lake, in Mohnyin and Hpakant townships.

The resistance groups toppled Huay Lung, Nyaung Pin on the road from Indawgyi to Hpakant town on June 23 after attacking them the day before. By the third day, they had forced out the Burma army and PMF while also taking Chaungwa camp along the same road.

A frontline KIA soldier explained they’re were still ‘cleaning’ these camps, adding they have plans to seize all of the remaining camps around Indawgyi Lake.

The junta utilised these camps to maintain control over the lake area and along the road where at least 50 soldiers were stationed in Nyaung Pin, and 30 each at Huay Lung and Chaungwa.

After two days, the Military Council flew airstrikes and fired artillery causing locals to scramble for safety.

A Hpakant man said that after the KIA gained control of the road from Huay Hkar to Tarmakhan a few months ago, the next stage was to take the road between Indawgyi and Hpakant.  Since early this year, the Kachin armed group has controlled the highway between Myitkyina – Karmaing – Hpakant- Huay Hkar – Tarmakhan.

As there are still regime soldiers still along Indawgyi Lake, locals expect to see more fighting in the area.
