After Many Casualties in Waingmaw Township, Regime Retaliates with Shelling and Airstrikes

After facing many casualties in Waingmaw Township, the military regime did what it usually does when it is losing by unleashing many artillery shells and airstrikes on civilians and resistance fighters.

These bombardments have damaged many homes in Wuyan, Lamyang, and Mukchid, near where the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allies have been fighting with Burma army soldiers and the Lisu People’s Militia Force for at least two days.

The regime lost many men, including an officer, a Waingmaw local has said. Photos of their bodies lying along the road have gone viral on social media.

A local man explained that fighting happened on June 18 near a church and residential neighbourhood in Lamyang. The next day there was also fighting between Wuyan and Nangzaw Yang. The regime shelled and flew airstrikes during the morning, noon, and evening with Y-12s against Lamyang and Mukchid where no fighting was reported. Practically every one of Lamyang’s 300 houses was damaged, including the AG Church.

When returning to the village, he lamented that the spectacle of seeing his two-storey home in ruins with many of the houses in his community also damaged.

Since June 11, the KIA and its allies have captured many of the regime installations between Sadunsg and Kanpaiti in Waingmaw Township.
