Burma army’s Nawng Kawn artillery battalion falls to KIA

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied forces captured the Burma army’s Nawng Kawn artillery battalion base in Momauk Township of Kachin State, according to local sources.

“The KIA and allies took control of the Nawng Kawn artillery battalion base around 7:30 a.m. on 23 March. From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, KIA troops attacked the Burma army camp in Konlaw village with heavy weapons. The KIA has not yet seized the Burma army camp in Konlaw village. The KIA attacked the Nawng Kawn artillery battalion after capturing the Burma army camp in Numlang village on 21 March,” a resident of Numlang village in Momauk Township, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told KNG.

The Nawng Kawn artillery battalion is located in Nawng Kawn village of Mahkoi village-tract in Momauk Township of Bhamo District in Kachin State. The artillery battalion was the Burma army’s biggest artillery battalion in Momauk Township. The battalion provided security for Burma army camps in Numlang, Myothit, Konlaw, Salawng Kon and Sihat villages.

Armed clashes continue in different parts of Momauk Township. The KIA and allied forces have been attacking Burma army military camps in Konlaw, Myothit and Salawng Kon villages since 21 March. On 23 March, the Burma army’s Y-12 aircraft conducted three bomb attacks on the Konlaw area.

Since 7 March, the KIA and allied forces have launched offensive operations against multiple Burma army positions near the KIA’s Laiza headquarters and along the Myitkyina–Bhamo highway. In the first two weeks after launching the offensive operation, the KIA and its allies have captured more than 30 military camps from the Burma army including hilltop camps, strategic military camps and battalion base camps.

The KIA and allied forces continue to attack Burma army positions in Kachin State’s Momauk Township and Waingmaw Township.
