Myitkyina Rail Workers Evicted For Joining CDM
Myitkyina railway station workers and their families who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) at the height of the protests, when workers across Burma refused to work until the military regime returned power to the democratic government, were evicted from their apartments in Myitkyina, Kachin State.
One worker told KNG on condition of anonymity that they were forced to leave their flats in the building owned by Burma Railway in Awng Nan Ward. “They have put a warning on the building and are preparing to demolish it with a backhoe. Soldiers from the Northern Military Command are building bunkers around the property.”
The sign warned to vacate the premises in the Kachin State capital by 15 June or face charges under the 1995 Government Housing Act.
Almost all the staff living there had taken part in the protest movement led by health workers, which saw many government servants walk off the job after the military coup on 1 February 2021.
Now they are homeless and some are reportedly sleeping rough on banks of the Irrawaddy River with their families at the start of the wet season.
