Tatmadaw Kills Civilian At Checkpoint In Hpakant Township
The Tatmadaw shot and killed a civilian and injured another as they passed a checkpoint on the Lido Road in Hpakant Township, a region in Kachin State where the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has been ambushing the military in recent days.
A man from Lawah told the KNG that on 28 September at around 5pm, the couple failed to stop their motorbike on the Sai Ling Hka bridge when ordered by soldiers. ”The soldiers shot at them, killing the male passenger and injuring the female driver’s hand,” he said.
Another man told KNG that the woman was arrested after the attack and the soldiers said she’d be taken to a military hospital for treatment.
The Tatmadaw had set up the checkpoint on the bridge in the morning and checked everyone who crossed. More than 200 soldiers have been in Lawah and Khun Hseng Yang and the surrounding areas for over a week.
Fearing that fighting could break out in Khun Hseng Yang, all 150 households moved to Lawah.
