Landslide Kills Woman In IDP Camp In Kachin State
A woman was killed and a 80-year woman wounded during a landslide in Maga Yang internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp, located southeast of Myitkyina, in Kachin Independence Organization controlled territory.
“Several houses collapsed during the landslide… A torrent poured down from the mountain,” the camp leader told KNG.
Five huts were washed away and ten were damaged in the landslide on August 12, which was triggered by heavy rains in the middle of the rainy season.
The leader told KNG that all those affected by the floods are staying in the camp’s church.”We have to build new homes for them and provide them with cooking equipment,” he said.
The landslide has blocked roads in the camp and residents are still trying to clear the debris.
Villagers affected by the conflict between the Burma Army and the KIO’s military arm, Kachin Independence Army, set up the camp in late 2016 on the Chinese border in Burma.
Heavy rains near the KIO headquarters in Laiza also inundated Hpong Lum Yang and Jay Yang IDP camps on the same day, where flooding occurs every year.
